A young Orthodox Jewish couple was killed in a hit-and-run car accident early this morning at the intersection of Kent Avenue and Wilson Street in Williamsburg that left their cab driver seriously injured and their unborn baby in critical condition following an emergency Cesarean section at Bellevue Hospital.
Police are still searching for the driver of the grey 2010 BMW sedan that slammed into the couple’s livery cab at approximately 12:10 a.m., leaving it an unrecognizable heap of mangled metal. The suspect was seen by witnesses to have been fleeing on foot from the accident scene, possibly with a female passenger.
The livery cab driver, a 32-year-old Hispanic male, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he is listed as being in stable condition.
The funeral for the young couple, Nathan and Raizy Glauber, both 21, began at 2 p.m. today in accordance with Orthodox Jewish law, which requires the funeral to be held as soon as possible within 24 hours of death.
The couple had been headed to the hospital to check on their unborn baby after Raizy began experiencing pains.
Raizy was ejected from the car upon impact and rolled and landed beneath a nearby tractor trailer. Nathan was partially crushed under the cab, which had to be cut open by emergency workers in order to get him out.
Their premature baby boy was delivered and is alive, but in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Bellevue. He will be named after his father, say neighbors.
The livery cab, a black 2008 Toyota Camry, was traveling westbound on Wilson Street when the BMW struck their driver’s side while heading northbound on Kent Avenue.
