You can’t teach writing, you can teach how to improve writing. To become a decent writer in the first place, you have to be a reader. Read, read, read, not skim and poke, click and run, as kids do on the screens that are ignorantly placed in front of them hour after hour, day after day. Until kids spend more time concentrating on writing, good writing which is print on pages of books, they will not wire their brains into the elements of good writing. Adults who grew up on books, on the printed page, and now use screens should not be the judges of what makes readers into writers. They can have it both ways. Kids can’t if their steady diet of not-quite-reading pops and crackles off of screens.
