67-year-old Sunset resident convicted of second-degree murder

On Friday, February 26, a 67-year-old man was convicted of murdering a 23-year-father and assaulting another victim in Sunset Park  following a jury trial before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent Del Giudice.

Juan Ramos, who lived on Second Avenue and 55th Street, was found guilty of one count of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing Giovanni Rodriguez-Arias during an argument on September 29, 2013 at approximately 3 p.m. He was also convicted of second- degree assault for stabbing a man, who was trying to help Rodriguez-Arias in the hand.

During the fatal altercation, Ramos stabbed Rodriguez-Arias in the stomach and arm with a knife that he had concealed beneath his sweater. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Following the murder, Ramos was identified by the New York Police Department as a suspect in the murder. After wanted posters with his photo were released to the public and a tip was received, Ramos was apprehended on the roof of a Sunset Park building.

Ramos will be sentenced on Thursday, March 10. He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

“This defendant murdered a young father of two and now will spend most of the rest of his life behind bars,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson after the conviction was announced.

The case was investigated by 72nd Precinct Detectives Elson Winchester and Detective Albert Lamoglia.
