A Look Back: The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

Drivers were among the first to get a glimpse of what would become the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, thanks to this billboard, standing near the site of the present-day span, and promising the completion of the bridge by 1965. Not only did the bridge get done the prior year, but – back in the day — its name more closely mirrored the name of the explorer for whom it was named, Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine who sailed to North America in the service of King Francis I of France. Verrazzano was the first European to catch a glimpse of New York harbor on the first of three voyages he made to the New World.
