The Kings County Supreme Court marked another annual Law Day, a commemoration that was adopted by a joint resolution of Congress as a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law.

The celebration, which took place on Monday, May 9 at 360 Adams Street, featured a keynote address by Supreme Court Justice Matthew D’Emic, the administrative judge for criminal matters, focusing on the subject of “Miranda: More than Words.”

In addition, this year, Administrative Judge for Civil Matters, the Honorable Lawrence Knipel, unveiled plans to reform judicial processes and procedures consistent with Chief Judge Janet DiFiore’s “Excellence Initiative,” which, Knipel explained, “involves a detailed and comprehensive analysis of current court processes and procedures to determine what is working well and what needs to be improved.”

According to Knipel, pre-trial discovery, guardianship and foreclosure procedures have already been reorganized.

“We had a wide variety of guests including Judge of the Court of Appeals Jenny Rivera; Presiding Judge of the Appellate Division, second department Randall T. Eng; and from Corporation Counsel, City of New York Zachary Carter,” said Knipel, who was the event’s master of ceremonies. “Matthew D’Emic, chief of our Criminal Division, was the key note speaker. He spoke on Miranda vs Arizona and we had Frank Seddio, president elect of the Brooklyn Bar Association, speaking as well.

“It was well attended,” he continued. “We had between 400 and 500 people there, including our 40 to 45 judges that were in attendance. It was a lovely ceremony.”
