Bay Ridge Cares holding design competition

As part of its efforts to continue revitalizing the Fort Hamilton Senior Center, Bay Ridge Cares is holding a design competition, giving local artists, both with and without experience, the opportunity to get their work on the facade of the building.

Back in October of 2017, the non-profit organization partnered with businesses and politicians to renovate the kitchen and lobby areas of the center, 9941 Fort Hamilton Parkway. This work included putting in a full-size oven and adding new lighting throughout the space.

The theme of this contest  is “Bridging the Seasons, with different seasons assigned to different age groups.

Winter is for adults 18-62; spring is for people 62 and older; summer is for students in kindergarten through eighth grade; autumn is for high school students.

“We want to involve all generations in unifying the exterior of the building,” said Karen Tadross, president of Bay Ridge Cares.

Artists in can submit their works in a number of ways including scanning the picture and sending it to bayridgecares@gmail.com. Additionally, artwork can be taken to State Senator Marty Golden’s office, 7408 Fifth Avenue; Councilmember Justin Brannan’s office, 8018 Fifth Avenue; or the Fort Hamiton Senior Center.

Artwork submissions are due by June 15.

Tadross expects a significant number of submissions for this competition.

“We’re hoping for 25 participants in each category,” Tadross said. “We welcome everyone of all ages to participate.”

Bay Ridge Cares is a non-profit organization whose motto is “An organization of neighbors dedicated to making our community a better place by doing all the good we can, in all the ways we can, for as many as we can.” In the past, the group has held a variety of neighborhood improving events such as holding Thanksgiving Day meals for those less fortunate and hosting a pancake breakfast to boost the community feeling throughout the area.
