Breezy Point and Silver Gull Surf clubs offer top-notch summer fun

For decades, Breezy Point Surf Club, 1 Beach 227th Street, and Silver Gull Beach Club, 1 Beach 193rd Street, have offered families a waterside community tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city with tons of amenities for members young and old.

And, the duo just keep getting better and better, with new amenities and facilities meant to enhance the experience for members.

“We offer free entertainment on the weekends, such as live bands, a gym in both clubs and activities directors at both clubs who make sure everyone is having a good time, and organize and run a lot of events from belly flop contests to paint and wine night,” said General Manager Jamie Blatman. “In additional to the close proximity to the ocean, we also offer swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball, bocce, paddleball and, of course, free parking. We have a full size softball field and a league. We offer free day camp for kids at both clubs for eight weeks.”

Besides the top-notch activities and facilities, it’s the members and tight knit community that make each facility special, with Breezy Point Surf Club celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and Silver Gull Beach Club open since 1963.

“At both clubs, most of our members have been coming for 40 to 50 years, generation after generation,” Blatman said. “They raised their families here. They retired and they still spend their summer days here. Some of the kids that were members now work here. It’s almost like our own little community within our gates.”

Since 2012, a lot of money has been invested in making the facilities even better. “Since the people I work for took over in 2012, they’ve put in over $8 million refurbishing the two clubs,” he noted. “We redid the bathrooms, kitchen, ice makers. We put in a new pool filter. We put in a pirate ship in the kiddie pool, a Jacuzzi, a tiki bar.”

Blatman added that the generational nature of the clubs keep them going strong. “It’s a great place for families to develop memories and spend time with kids, doing things you can’t necessarily do in Brooklyn or Queens or Manhattan,” he said. “A majority of our members come from those boroughs.”

And, the two clubs are easily accessible, he added. “You can take the ferry from the city or downtown Brooklyn now, and it will get you right to Rockaway,  or you go over the Marine Parkway Bridge. People from Marine Park are here in 15 minutes tops. You’re playing in the sand all day and it’s literally just minutes away from most of New York. ”
