On March 16, the P.S. 101 Vikings played against St. Mary’s team in their annual basketball game. It is a neighborhood tradition.

Parents and students watched the exciting game between the two Bensonhurst teams, and the Vikings, coached by Gary Kane, beat St. Mary’s with a score of 13-8. Ironically, the daughter of St. Mary’s coach Dom Merola played for the Vikings and made a clutch shot to ensure the victory!

On March 23, 10 seniors from St. Edmund Prep High School participated in the annual Sports Career Education Day at Barclays Center. The students attended a panel discussion with front office executives from both the New York Islanders and the Brooklyn Nets.

The panel members spoke about careers in the field of collegiate and professional sports. Participants also had the opportunity to meet with representatives from several colleges that offer Sports Management as a major.

All students who attended this event were invited to stay for that evening’s NBA game between the Nets and Phoenix Suns, and the St. Edmund Prep students enjoyed the added treat.

Thanks to the efforts of SEP Co-Directors of Athletics, Jim Grillo ’02, who is a game clock operator for the Nets, and Dan Wiatre, they were able to take a pre-game tour of the scorer’s table and media area. They spent some time visiting with Nets announcer David Diamante and legendary scorekeeper Herb Turetzky.
