Brooklyn enjoys great views as Macy’s Fireworks Show returns to East River

For the first time in five years, Brooklynites were able to celebrate one of the country’s biggest firework displays properly. The 38th annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show returned to the East River and Brooklyn Bridge, giving residents of the borough a chance to enjoy stellar views of the show for the first time since the show was moved to the other side of Manhattan, the Hudson River, since 2009.

“Living in Brooklyn, you couldn’t get a good view of fireworks. This year was terrific though,” said Ted General who was at Brooklyn Bridge Park for the festivities. “Macy’s really does a great show. It was one of their better fireworks display and it’s terrific that it’s back on the East Side after the few years being on West Side.”

The fireworks display launched from barges positioned along the East River, south of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Spectators close to the Brooklyn Bridge weren’t the only ones able to see the show. “I talked to people who were in Sunset Park and they said they had fantastic views of the fireworks,” General said. “There were good viewing sites through most of borough, especially when you’re closer to the water.” In addition, spectators at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade were treated to good views.

Musically, the show returned to its roots this year, shifting from last year’s contemporary tunes to more patriotic songs.

Initially the wet weather put a slight damper on the holiday. “People like to show up a few hours early to find a close-up spot to watch the display. So the might’ve discouraged people initially,” said General. However, as the weather improved, attendance grew. “The park was packed with both young and old. Everyone had a good time.”

General hopes the tradition continues, and that, “next year they continue to keep the firework show in the East River. Brooklynites react with more excitement than in other boroughs.”
