Brooklynites enjoying the snow at Shore Road Park.

Brooklyn residents woke up to a snowy surprise this past weekend, welcoming just about a foot of snow into the borough along with some obligatory groans.

The early Saturday, January 7 snowfall had the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) issuing a snow alert at around 7 a.m.

According to DSNY, more than 2,300 pieces of snow-fighting equipment were out on city streets and roads at 6 p.m. on Saturday, including more than 1,500 plows and over 670 spreaders. In a tweet sent out at about 6:40 p.m. on Saturday, the department stated that “every block will be done” and in a later tweet alerted New Yorkers that “DSNY crews will be working through the night, plowing and salting city roads.”

According to the National Weather Service, the highest accumulation of snow in the borough happened in Marine Park and Sheepshead Bay, with about 6.8 inches falling. The citywide average was between four and eight inches with Brooklyn averaging about 5.8.

In the case of future storms, residents can track progress of DSNY spreader/plow vehicles; and confirm the snow designation of City streets with PlowNYC, an online tracking website designed to inform the public on plowing progress. The data, however, is provided for informational purposes only. To submit a formal service request to NYC, use 311.

Send us your snow photos to and you can see them online or in print!
