Celebrate Valentine’s Day in Brooklyn

Love is in the air in Brooklyn-style.

Valentine’s Day has once again crept up on love birds across the borough. Although buying chocolates and other gifts is on the agenda, finding the perfect place to take your date can be a challenging task. It can be costly and takes plenty of planning. Luckily, Brooklyn has plenty of options, both traditional and unique, where love can blossom while having a great time.

If you and your date are into art or music, the Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, has an enticing offer. On Saturday, February 14 from 1-4p.m., the venue is offering galleries ‘through the lens of love.’ The day will include exhibits, a Pop-Up Sensory tour, and complimentary snacks courtesy of Salty Road, which is providing its special edition Sweet & Spicy cinnamon drops. For couples that are movie lovers, but aren’t interested in contemporary offerings, BAM Rose Cinema, 30 Lafayette Avenue, is hosting a Valentine’s Day special viewing of the 1940 classic romantic comedy “The Philadelphia Story,” starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. If sitting around isn’t your thing and you want some activity during your date, you can get an early start on the celebration thanks to the Prospect Park Alliance, which is hosting a Valentine’s Day 5K Run on Sunday, February 8 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., beginning at Bartel-Pritchard Square.

Attendees can either bear the cold alone or with a significant other during the competitive race, which is sponsored by Brooklyn Road Runners. In addition, on the big day, Prospect Park also offers a state-of-the-art outdoor skating rink, the LeFrak Center at Lakeside Prospect Park, 171 East Drive.

If you want to enjoy the glories of nature, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is hosting its Conservatory Seasonal Highlights Tour from 1-1:45 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Attendees can view the plants of South Africa, Australia and Brazil – and maybe begin to plan a romantic getaway a deux. Visit www.bbg.org for more information.

For those who are unattached, on Wednesday, February 11, the New York Transit Museum, Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street, will once again try to play matchmaker during its fifth annual Missed Connections party.

Attendees will get the opportunity to mingle in vintage trains, take pictures in a photo booth, write love poetry, try their hand at crafts and enjoy local eats and drinks, such as those created by NuNu Chocolates, Brooklyn Winery and Brooklyn Brewery.
