Common Sense: A ticket emerges

The New York State Conservative Party, upon the recommendation of the five Conservative Party county organizations in the City of New York, has nominated its citywide ticket —  Nicole Malliotakis for mayor, Michel Faulkner for comptroller and Michael O’Reilly for public advocate.

The party will not only contribute many thousands of votes on its own line, Column “C,” it will also provide volunteers and assistance with fundraising which all candidates need.  The party, much to the credit of its state Chairperson Mike Long, has a national image which will aid the candidates in seeking support outside the city’s boundaries.

Assemblymember Malliotakis has, in just under a month of active campaigning for mayor, already garnered a great deal of attention as a result of her willingness to go most anywhere to speak and meet people, as well as her desire to issue statements on policy issues and items in the news on a regular basis.

Her fundraising is also going quite well, having raised almost $100,000 in her first two weeks of reporting with fundraising continuing at an impressive clip.

The Republican Party county organizations will be making their endorsements in the next few weeks with petitioning beginning for all on the first Tuesday in June.

The Brooklyn Conservative Party will be holding its 33rd POW/MIA ceremony at Look Out Point at Shore Road and 81st Street on Memorial Day this upcoming Monday at 10 a.m.  Each year, the party, usually accompanied by the St Anselm’s Boy Scout troop, presents the Parks Department with a POW/MIA flag to be flown at this location throughout the year. There is a short ceremony in which we keep our commitment to Never Forget.  Afterwards, Conservative Party members and Boy Scouts reassemble at the Memorial Day Parade to march

All are welcome. It is a great way to start off your Memorial Day.

Oscar Lopez Rivera should never have been pardoned. The confessed organizer and henchman behind FALN terrorist bombings that killed or injured dozens is now a free man about to be honored at this year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York at the behest of City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

This honor should have been reserved for a Puerto Rican educator/artist/writer/inventor or anyone in a dozen categories that great men and women inhabit. Yet the speaker, using her influence, managed to get the committee to honor a murderer.

This is disgraceful and a national embarrassment for our city that acts as host. Sponsors should boycott this event and those that do not should be boycotted. So far, Jet Blue and Goya have withdrawn support. Hopefully, others like AT&T will follow.

Marching groups should decline to participate. All Hispanic police organizations have taken themselves out of the parade for the first time in its history. And elected officials who swear an oath to our Constitution should not march behind a man who conducted a deadly campaign of political terror in New York City and other American cities.

This parade, as well as the many other ethnic parades, are one of the really nice things that happen more in New York City than any other place in the nation. There is always some element of politics. It is expected, but honoring a terrorist really crosses the line.
