Elementary school info sessions being held in District 21 tonight, 20 next week

For the first time, all 32 community school districts across the city will be pit-stops for new, all-encompassed school admissions events, announced Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña at the end of last month, with District 21’s event taking place tonight at Seth Low Intermediate School.

The events — which, in previous years, consisted of only five borough-wide information sessions with separate sessions for pre-k, kindergarten and Gifted & Talented programs — will include information on all three elementary admissions processes, in an effort to save time for families looking to create a longer-term plan for their child’s education.

The new-and-improved sessions — appropriately dubbed It’s Elementary! — will also include stations where families can find their zoned and non-zoned school options, sign up to test for Gifted & Talented, and prepare to apply to pre-K and kindergarten.

“Equity and Excellence for All means engaging parents as our partners, and the new It’s Elementary! events are really about meeting them where they are – by bringing these events into their neighborhoods and offering more and better information,” said Fariña. “I look forward to continued collaboration with families and educators to make admissions processes to all our great schools more accessible.”

Each It’s Elementary! event will have Department of Education staff on hand – as well as interpreters and resources in all 10 DOE languages – to answer families’ questions. Families can also learn about school services that support a child’s education, including transportation, school food, special education, and English Language Learner programs.

Families can register for the sessions online at ItsElementary.Eventbrite.com, though registration is not required.

Tonight’s event will take place at Seth Low (99 Avenue P) from 6 to 8 p.m. District 20’s It’s Elementary! event will take place on Tuesday, November 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School (5800 20th Avenue).
