Kareem Potomont of Flatbush has been convicted in a 2014 shooting that cost a 13-year-boy his right eye.

A Flatbush man has been convicted of assault after shooting a 13-year-old boy in the eye while attempting to gun down a rival near Flatbush Avenue and Beverley Road more than three years ago.

According to trial testimony, just before noon on April 14, 2014, the defendant – 24-year-old Kareem Potomont – opened fire on an intended target, a 24-year-old man, who was struck in the leg. Meanwhile, the young boy, who was waiting at a nearby bus stop with his aunt and cousin, was struck in the right eye by a stray bullet.

Potomont was caught on camera shooting the firearm and then fleeing from the scene. He was arrested three days later.

The older victim was treated for his gunshot wound and released, while the child lost vision in his right eye and underwent multiple surgeries, eventually having his eye removed.

Potomont was convicted of first-degree assault, attempted assault and reckless endangerment as well as second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The shooter’s sentencing is scheduled for September 22, at which time he faces up to 40 years in prison.
