Former prosecutor Ama Dwimoh in the running for Brooklyn DA seat

According to reports, former Brooklyn prosecutor Ama Dwimoh, currently serving Borough President Eric Adams’ administration as special counsel and chief compliance officer, is seriously considering a run for the Brooklyn District Attorney seat, the Brooklyn Reporter has learned.

Prosecuting a number of notable cases throughout her career, Dwimoh’s most recent work in the Crimes Against Children Bureau, a division she established in 1997, is perhaps some of her most notable.

The Daily News pinned Dwimoh as an early hopeful in the race for DA in an article posted earlier this month, calling her work as a prosecutor “fearless” and “groundbreaking.”

Other names rumored to be in the running are current Acting District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Councilmember Vincent Gentile, Patricia Gatling, Anne Swern and Arthur Aidala.

With the unexpected death of the late Ken Thompson, Brooklyn’s DA from 2013 to October, 2016 when he succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer, large shoes are left to be filled.

Having campaigned on the promise of restoring confidence in the criminal justice system, Thompson established a model Conviction Review Unit which, in three years, moved to vacate or support the dismissal of the convictions of 21 people who were wrongfully convicted of murder and other offenses.

Before becoming DA in 2013, Thompson served as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York, a special assistant to the U.S. Treasury Department Undersecretary for Enforcement in Washington, D.C., and in the General Counsel’s Office at the Treasury.
