FYI: NYPD issues a citywide carjacking alert

A citywide carjacking alert has been issued following seven (7) carjackings during the month of May, at a rate of two per week, after 11 p.m. in Brooklyn and Staten Island, said the NYPD.

The investigation is ongoing, but according to “preliminary” information released by the NYPD, the carjacking pattern reportedly consists of one to three black men confronting the victim, either with verbal threats, a weapon — a gun and knife — or another car. For example:

  • In three of the incidents the subject uses a weapon (gun and knife) and in another the subject threatens the victim.
  • In two other incidents the subjects use their car (also a high end make) to bump the victim’s car and when the victim exits his car to look at damage the subjects flee with the victim’s car.
  • One other incident the victim is at a car wash waiting for his car when the subject jumps in and takes the car.

The types of cars targeted are high-end vehicles, such as Mercedes, BMW’s, and Range Rovers.

Two of the vehicles, from Incidents #2 and #3, were recovered in Newark, NJ, while the car in Incident # 5 was recovered by a Border Enforcement Security Task Force inside a container heading to Toga, Africa.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call NYPD Central Robbery Division at 212-426-2723 /2721 /2730 or the NYPD Staten Island Robbery Squad at 718-876-8414 /8415.
