Get a head start on your Labor Day trip planning with these MTA updates

Although it’s only Monday, there’s no harm in looking ahead and preparing for Labor Day weekend.

According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), railroads will provide extra service on Friday, September 2 in preparation for the holiday weekend and All MTA services will operate on reduced schedules on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Details from the MTA are as follows:

Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad

On Friday, September 2, the LIRR will offer 10 extra afternoon trains departing Penn Station and Metro-North will offer 17 extra afternoon trains departing Grand Central Terminal. For customers departing for Orange and Rockland Counties, Metro-North will offer an extra departure from Hoboken on the Port Jervis Line, with connecting service from Penn Station.

New York City Subways and Buses

MTA New York City Transit subways and buses and MTA Bus Company buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day, Monday, September 5.

Because of the J’Ouvert Parade on Monday, September 5, from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. in Brooklyn, the Church Avenue 2 station will be closed and bypassed from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. on Monday, September 5.  Buses in the area will be rerouted.

Because of the West Indian-American Day Parade on Monday, September 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. along Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, certain subway entrances in the parade area may be affected and buses in the area will be rerouted.  The Eastern Pkwy- Brooklyn Museum 2,3,4 station will be closed and bypassed from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, September 5.

At the Crown Hts-Utica Avenue 3,4 station, certain staircases will be designated entrance/exit only. 4 trains will make local stops in Brooklyn.

Staten Island Railway

Staten Island Railway (SIR) customers will be able to catch earlier afternoon express train service on Friday, September 2, with Staten Island Railway’s Early Departure Getaway schedule.  This schedule means extra SIR trains will be added earlier in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal.  There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m. SIR will operate on a Sunday Schedule on Labor Day, Monday September 5.

Bridges and Tunnels

 MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all lane closures related to routine maintenance and temporary construction work beginning 6 a.m. on Friday, September 2, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, September 6, to accommodate motorists traveling throughout the busy travel weekend.  Exceptions are the ongoing Fast Track Sandy Restoration work at the Queens Midtown Tunnel on Friday, and at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel through the weekend. At least one lane in each direction will always remain open at both tunnels.  Motorists can ease their trip by using EZPass.
