Grand Army Plaza lights giant menorah for the 31st year in a row

The festival of lights saw a celebration truly fit for the biggest borough as Grand Army Plaza’s annual lighting of one of the world’s largest menorahs kicked off on Saturday, December 24 – the first night of Chanukah.

Celebrated with live music, hot latkes and gifts for children, the yearly tradition – which began in 1985 – is a truly special celebration in Brooklyn.

With assistance from a Con Edison cherry-picker, Rabbi Shimon Hecht accompanied community leaders, elected officials, philanthropists and special guests in lighting the 32-foot tall menorah, the maximum allowed by Jewish law, according to NYC Parks.

The lighting took place at 7 p.m. on December 24; at 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 25 through Thursday, December 29; at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, December 30 and at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 31.
