Ground broken at Fort Hamilton High School for new athletic field

On Wednesday, May 30, Councilmember Justin Brannan along with Parks Department officials broke ground at Fort Hamilton High School, where construction will begin on a new track and field.

The $4.7 million project was announced last October by then-Councilmember Vincent Gentile. In total, the budget for this renovation had been $5.5 million according to a report from last year, with funding allocated by Gentile, former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

“It’s such a beloved space and it’s needed a lot of love for a long time,” said Brannan. “I just want to get the word out to folks that it’s happening, and we’re breaking ground and it’ll be done before you know it.”

Renovations to the popular Bay Ridge park haven’t been made since 2001 when the grass field was replaced with artificial turf that has now become worn and painful to those playing on it.

Additionally, the field replacement–provided by the USGreentech company–will be accompanied by a new track that circles the field, and a new high-tech scoreboard for use during Fort Hamilton High School baseball, football and soccer games.

“Residents wait a long time and they get antsy, and I get it — it’s important they know what’s going on,” Brannan told this paper. “By next spring, you’ll have a whole new field, a whole new track and it’s going to be a beautiful thing.”

Construction will continue throughout the summer, and the area will be closed off to the public until spring, 2018, when the facility is projected to reopen.

Fort Hamilton High School is located at 8301 Shore Road.
