Brooklyn Brewery released its Silver Anniversary Lager today, in honor of its 25th anniversary as one of the pioneers of Brooklyn’s “cultural renaissance” over the last two or so decades.
The lager is “a special doppelbock version of the Brooklyn Lager we introduced in 1988” and is “re-fermented in the bottle and will taste great today or years from now. The original was inspired by the beers of 19th Century New York and Vienna.”
The beer is being released throughout the year in 750 ml bottles with four different labels, each designed by a different local artist who has been a part of the Brooklyn Brewery family in some way since the beginning: Fred Tomaselli, Roxy Paine, Joe Amhrein and Elizabeth Crawford.
Tomaselli’s label is the first to come out and is based on his 2009 painting, Breathing Head. He first met Brooklyn Brewery co-founder Steve Hindy at Kasia’s, the popular Williamsburg diner in the 1980s.
Amhrein was one of the local businessowners who served Brooklyn Lager in their premises; in Amhrein’s case, it was his art gallery, Pierogi 2000. His label will depict his work, A Fallability of Perception.
Paine’s was one of the Brewery’s first neighbors when they had a warehouse in Bushwick. His label is a study for a sculpture called Vertical Sequence.
Crawford is a painter who once chose Brooklyn Lager for a painting called Sacred and Profane Love. Her label is called Brooklyn World.
The first label will have a launch party tonight at Brooklyn Bowl; each successive label will get its own launch party every season in 2013.
