Kathy Libraty makes street art her own

The first four years of her life were spent in France; she then moved to Brooklyn, her hometown, which birthed her love for street photography.

Kathy Libraty has been documenting images and moments in time since the 1980s. She drives all around Brooklyn with her camera, capturing different locations of graffiti and wall murals that speak to and jump out at her.

On April 6, Bay Ridge will be the site of her latest exhibition: Horror Vacui-Part 2, originally presented at a local Starbucks during August of last year.

“It’s a series I’ve been doing,” the artist explained of her illustrations. “I go back over and over again to the same places and see how they’ve changed,” she added of the graffiti she commonly photographs.

“Art is a constantly changing thing,” Libraty went on.

The murals aren’t hers, but Libraty makes sure to put her signature on them by getting people to pose in front of the painted walls. This includes her daughter and “muse” Elisa Renee Libraty.

“In many of the images presented here, I have employed my lovely daughter to pose and add a human context to the images,” Libraty said. “She has generously contributed her time and dramatic talent to enhance my photographic visions.

“A musical artist in her own right, Elisa has that elusive charisma, charm and humor that jumps out of the photographs and demands your full attention,” Libraty added.

Libraty says her favorite areas are Bushwick and Greenpoint due to the proliferation of street art in those neighborhoods.

She loves to see people second-guess themselves of her daughter standing in the image: Is she painted? Is she real?

“Just to make an interesting impact,” on her audience is wonderful, she noted.

The exhibition of Libraty’s photos will take place on April 6 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Gallery 364, 364 72nd Street.

Besides her love and passion for photography, Kathy operates and owns an antique doll business with her husband, gaining international recognition in this field and being featured as a result in The New York Times and on Eyewitness News as an expert on the Antiques Road Show.
