Local group spearheads Sunset Park scavenger hunt

Happy hunting!

One local group has spearheaded an ongoing scavenger hunt for its beloved Sunset Park.

The Sunset Parker Village Council on Facebook has created an architectural scavenger hunt for the ‘hood, which is home to the largest Federal Register Historic District in the state, with over 3,200 buildings listed.

The hunt – which lasts 46 blocks with one item per street – follows the course of a previously created Sunset Park walking tour that starts at 59th Street and Fourth Avenue near the subway and ends just over a mile north at the 36th Street subway station, also on Fourth Avenue.

According to the group, participants will find themselves looking for items like “a specific limestone lintel above a doorway, decorative carvings in brownstone buildings and unusual roof copings.” Some more unique items include “two masonry urns, a glass globe and a metal box labeled, ‘Monument Borough President Brooklyn.'”

For a full list of the items on the hunt (available in photo form), visit http://sprcmail.wixsite.com/vending/sunset-scavenger-hunt/ There, those who have already scavenged can also submit photos of their findings.
