Councilmember Mark Treyger has been named the new chair of the Council's Committee on Education.

A Coney Island councilmember and former southern Brooklyn high school teacher has been selected to serve as the new chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Education.

Councilmember Mark Treyger – a former history and civics teacher at New Utrecht High School and former United Federation of Teachers delegate – will head the committee for the 2018-2021 term.

“I believe in the New York City school system and the thousands of dedicated, hardworking administrators, educators and support staff that commit themselves to providing our city’s youth with a quality education,” said Treyger who, in his tenure in with the Council, has introduced and supported an array of legislation aimed at aiding city schools. “I believe in it because I am a product of it, and because I had the privilege of being one of those educators. Our thriving city is constantly changing, and so are the needs of our diverse and vibrant student body.

“We need to ensure that New York City schools continue to grow and meet those needs, as well. I am incredibly proud and honored to be tasked with the responsibility of helming the Council’s oversight of our city’s schools,” he went on, thanking the newly minted City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.

“[Councilmember] Treyger is a product of New York City’s public schools and a former city high school teacher,” said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new post, and we look forward to working with him even more closely on issues important to more than one million public school students and their families.”

Locally, freshman Councilmember Justin Brannan was also tapped as the chair of the Committee on Contracts.
