Local youth team up with Brooklyn electeds for neighborhood clean-up

Another successful clean-up is in the books for Bensonhurst and Bath Beach as local students teamed up with elected officials and district leaders on Sunday, October 16 to beautify the streets of southwest Brooklyn once again.

This go around, the target areas were on 86th Street from 25th Avenue to 16th Avenue, 18th Avenue from Benson Avenue to 82nd Street and the area surrounding Bensonhurst Park.

“The goal of having multiple clean-ups every year is to ensure the cleanliness of our neighborhood,” said Assemblymember William Colton, who sponsored the clean-up alongside Councilmember Mark Treyger and District Leaders Nancy Tong and Charles Ragusa. “We also encourage store owners to do their part by handing them fliers to remind them that beautifying the community is a team effort and we must all work together. I’m glad we continue to keep the streets clean and will continue to do so.”

According to Colton’s office, the clean-ups are done in direct response to community cleanliness concerns, and, in addition to cleaning, participants utilize the time to speak to residents and business owners about sanitation rules and guidelines.

“We must continue to be a positive influence on the community and I hope the fliers will encourage the store owners to be good role models in keeping the neighborhood clean as well,” Tong said.

“It makes me very glad to see the group of volunteers develop and branch out every clean-up,” added Ragusa. “Our goal is to not only clean the streets but to spread the positive message to everyone.”
