A Look Back: The ferry that once was

As the new Bay Ridge to Manhattan ferry kicked off on Thursday, June 1, it seems to be an appropriate time to look back at another ferry that once sailed from the 69th Street Pier.

This photo, from the archives of this newspaper, marked a sad and long-regretted ending, as the Bay Ridge to Staten Island ferry service halted upon the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964.

At its center is the shuttered toll booth once utilized by that old ferry, right at the entrance to the pier.
