The Loew’s Oriental theater was a staple on 86th Street, near 18th Avenue, for decades. Opened in October, 1927, it was shuttered in May, 1995, and just a couple of years later became a Marshall’s Department Store.
This photo dates to 1992 — the year “Sister Act,” “Encino Man” and “Basic Instinct” debuted. The first film screened at the theater, according to cinematreasures.org was “Beau Geste” with Ronald Colman. Besides showing films, the 2,753 seat Oriental offered live vaudeville, says cinematreasures.org, which notes that the theater was split into two in 1977, then into three in 1984.
