In this photo from the files of this newspaper, taken in the days following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the American flag is seen waving over the wreckage at Ground Zero.

The image, in the wake of the disaster and destruction, was an inspirational one, reminding New Yorkers and their fellow Americans that we could and would rebuild, even in the face of such evil as had brought down the World Trade Center and murdered nearly 3,000 innocent people.

While 16 years have passed since that dreadful day, we have annually recommitted ourselves to remembering and honoring those who perished on September 11, 2001.
