New Year’s Resolution: Food that’s good and good for you

What better way to start off the New Year than by making healthier choices? After all, it is the perfect time to get rid of some of that excess holiday weight. However, that doesn’t have to mean greens only; it can also include vegan meat, healthy starches and other good-and-good-for-you options. Take the first step by checking out some healthy options below. Pro Tip: Stay away from the sodas!

Tutt Café

47 Hicks Street (between Cranberry Street & Middagh Street) in Brooklyn Heights

Humus salad, Foul salad, Tabbouleh salad, you name it. Not only does this quaint Middle Eastern restaurant offer a variety of salads (14 choices, but who’s counting?), it also serves fresh pita straight out of a pizza-style oven. A recommended option is the combination plate with a choice of five salads served with fresh pita. In addition, the eatery’s pizzas, flavored with Middle Eastern spices, are a must-try. FYI, patrons also rave about Tutt’s “cornbread” or Sfouf, Lebanese cake infused with honey and almonds for when you’ve been extra good.

Natural Blend

769A Washington Avenue in Crown Heights

Visit Natural Blend to satisfy all your cravings at once. This vegan hole-in-the-wall offers everything yummy with the added benefit of natural ingredients. So go nuts over its Nutty Pumpkin Bread, Citrus Spare Ribs and Lasagna Dinners. Of course, all the food on its menu is vegan! Even their smoothies are blended with almond milk, organic soy milk or fruit juices. If that doesn’t sound healthy enough, the place also serves juices. A big plus is the different portion sizes available for both food and drinks.

Purbird

82 Sixth Avenue in Park Slope

If going vegan for a few weeks is not an option, get a taste of some organic chicken here. Hormone-free, antibiotic-free and free range. The restaurant is known for their fire grilled, fresh and juicy chicken. And alright, keep the soda, because they serve organic Grown-up Sodas.

Gourmet Fit

6819 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge

Gourmet Fit is another organic option. It serves grass fed beef and gluten free grass fed beef sliders on pão de queijo, Brazilian cheese bread. Instead of fried calamari, the eatery makes grilled calamari. The restaurant’s lasagna is also note-worthy, as it is made with zucchini instead of pasta and tastes pretty darn delicious.
