Open casting call: Fontbonne seeking male lead for ‘Saturday Night Fever’

So, you think you can dance?

Fontbonne Hall Academy is looking for its John Travolta, or, Tony Manero, if you will.

The all-girls Catholic high school. which is set to put on the first-ever schools-approved rendition of “Saturday Night Fever” this spring, is looking for its leading man.

“It’s really, really cool,” explained the show’s director Susan Huizinga, stressing that the school is working directly with the rights company to put on what she refers to as the “school edition” in honor of the 40th anniversary of the release of the iconic film, parts of which were filmed in Fontbonne’s hometown of Bay Ridge.

Released in 1977, “Saturday Night Fever” tells the story of Manero (played by Travolta), a working-class youngster who spends his weekends dancing at a local Brooklyn disco.

“We’re looking for our John Travolta,” Huizinga told this paper. “You know, ‘Saturday Night Fever’ was a big deal here. A lot of people remember seeing John Travolta walking down the street with a can of paint, and that’s just part of what makes this really cool.”

The ideal candidate, she said, is someone “who’s not afraid to dance.”

Of course, the leading man must be of high school age, she said.

The cast rehearses at Fontbonne every Thursday and Friday after school as well as Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The curtains will rise on the show on May 5, 6 and 7.
