P.S. 170 celebrates new addition at ribbon cutting

The long-awaited addition to P.S. 170 was celebrated by students, teachers, the community and local officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the school’s main entrance on Friday, June 17.

The ceremony, which was hosted by P.S 170 and the District 20 Community Education Council, introduced community leaders and parents to the new addition, that includes a new library, kitchen, science lab and updated classrooms, which debuted after four years of petitioning and patience.

“This was a long-time coming,” said Laurie Windsor, president of the District 20 Community Education Council. “There hasn’t been a proper library here in years, and now we do. It’s exciting.”

Students thanked the community and the council for backing the expansion with performances by the P.S. 170 fifth grade band and the P.S. 170 Chorus. Principal Tony Wu, who had pushed for the addition to happen, is excited to make new memories with his students in the new building.

“We have 1,115 students, so this addition was very much needed. It’s wonderful that the community and school share the same passion for educating the children,” said Wu.

Superintendent and alumnus Karina Costantino remembers how difficult it was to attend school with the overcrowding. Despite the tight space, she recalls P.S. 170 as a great school for education and growth.

“Even though it’s double the size now, it’s still the same nurturing environment I remember,” said Costantino.
