P.S. 185 crowned citywide clean up champs

Bay Ridge’s own P.S. 185, the Walter Kassenbrock School, has been awarded the highest honor in the 2012 Golden Apple Awards presented by the New York City Department of Sanitation Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling.

A total of $7,000 in prizes were awarded to the Brooklyn school, which managed to snag the title of Citywide and Borough winner of the Team Up to Clean Up challenge.

Also recipients of the Brooklyn Golden Shovel Award for Master School Composter, the students of P.S. 185 took to the auditorium to celebrate their achievements alongside teachers, parents from the Go Green Committee, DOS professionals and Councilmember Vincent Gentile.

Proud Principal Kenneth Llinas praised the children for their achievements and mentioned their worm farm. It’s like we’re in the country, he joked.

Dressed head to toe in green, the P.S. 185 chorus took to the stage to regale audience members with cheerful songs. Anytime you hear the School 185 chorus, you’re in for a special treat, Llinas said about the singers.

Followed by a smile-inducing slideshow of pictures, Gentile took center stage to congratulate the students on the award. You are now citywide winners, Gentile said. Go forth being very proud.

DOS Project Coordinator Emily Bendetti not only presented the children with their Golden Shovel Award, but also gave them a very generous gift. I brought you guys 1,000 worms, she exclaimed.

With contagious smiles sprawled across the room, members of the Go Green Committee — including Administrative Head Rena Goudelias, Parent Head Adelle Doyle, Compost Master Kate Wimsatt, Organizer Donna Feder, Stefania Vasquenz and Danielle Bullock, among others –stood proud alongside the dedicated, green-thumbed, worm-loving students.
