Deck the halls!

Owl’s Head Park played host to its sixth annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in front of the park house across from Bliss Terrace and 68th Street.

Owl’s Head Park Horticulture Group of the Shore Road Parks Conservancy and State Senator Marty Golden organized the annual event.

Although the weather was a tad wet, many attended the festive event, held on Tuesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. that included the same holiday fanfare the neighborhood has been accustomed to, such as free cookies courtesy of Golden and hot cocoa provided by the Bay Ridge Manor, Christmas songs performed by the Guild for Exceptional Children (GEC) Choir and Santa giving out gifts to the youngsters. Councilmember Vincent Gentile also was part of the event.

“The ceremony went great even when the rain came down in buckets during the ending,” said Susan Frances, community coordinator for the park’s Horticulture Group. “This is the fourth year in a row that it has rained on our ceremony.  Still, everyone stayed for the finale.  There were about 300 guests who showed up.  One guest told us that she was raised in Bay Ridge and moved to Flatlands but she came back for this ceremony because she always enjoys it.  That is a huge compliment to the volunteers at Owl’s Head Park who have been organizing this show since 2012.”

“Another great night ringing in the holiday season!” GEC wrote on its Facebook page.

During the festivities, Golden showed his appreciation for the volunteers from the Owl’s Head Park Horticulture Group and the Shore Road Parks Conservancy.

“Thank you for making a difference each and every day in our community, supporting Owl’s Head, Bay Ridge and this holiday season,” he told the crowd.
