Red Hook event strengthens community-police relations

The Red Hook community launched its first-ever annual “Unity in the Community” basketball tournament on Saturday, July 30.

The tournament was hosted by 38th District Councilmember Carlos Menchaca and took place at the Joseph Miccio Community Center (110 West 9th Street).

The goal of the event was to bolster the relationship between the Red Hook community and police, by hosting basketball games between members of the NYPD and local Red Hook youth.

“We are all on the same team,” said Menchaca in a Facebook post following the event. “Thank you to all the amazing local organizations and sponsors who made this happen, everyone pulled their own and made magic tonight.”

The event, sponsored partly by several local community organizations, also featured games of street soccer.
