Liam McCabe is all smiles after announcing his City Council run.

The contenders keep on coming.

Bay Ridge resident Liam McCabe is now the third Republican officially vying for the City Council’s coveted 43rd district seat.

The former aide to Congressmember Dan Donovan announced his run for the seat, which encompasses Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach and Bensonhurst, on Thursday, February 2 to family and friends at the Leif Bar, 6725 Fifth Avenue.

“I was very excited and humbled to see over 100 people turn out to hear my decision regarding the race,” McCabe said, “The love and support I felt from the community was undeniable and I intend to make the neighborhood that has supported me my whole life proud.”

McCabe is, so far, up against fellow Republicans Bob Capano, an aide to Republican businessman John Catsimatidis who announced his run last year, and John Quaglione, current communications director for State Senator Marty Golden, who also announced on Thursday.

On the other side of the aisle, even more people have expressed serious interest in making the run. Democrat Justin Brannan is currently raising funds for a council run and Democratic District Leader Nancy Tong has entered the race while the Reverend Khader El-Yateem, Democratic District Leader Kevin Peter Carroll and Assemblymember Peter Abbate are also rumored to be considering running for the Democratic nomination.

The seat is currently held by Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who has represented the 43rd District for more than 13 years, and who cannot run again come next year’s election due to term limits.
