“Shop for a Cause” Weekend soon to kick off at King’s Plaza Macy’s

Macy’s at King Plaza Shopping Center, 5100 Kings Plaza, has partnered up with March of Dimes in support of its fight against infant prematurity, birth defects and mortality.

The “Shop for a Cause” Weekend will kick off on Friday, August 26, and offers a $5 savings pass with all proceeds going directly to March of Dimes research and family support. The program is a national partnership between Macy’s and March of Dimes that managed to accumulate $3 million in 2015.

“I will be volunteering at the Kings Plaza Macy’s this Saturday in an effort to boost sales and increase funds raised.”said Ridgeite John Quaglione, co-chair of the newly formed Brooklyn chapter of the March of Dimes. “Last year alone, the Macy’s at Kings Plaza raised almost $10,000 and we hope to reach or surpass that goal this year.”

The 78-year-old organization was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt with the mission of containing the polio epidemic that affected him so personally. Upon achieving the movement’s goal, focus shifted from destroying the rise of polio, to backing the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. Considering prematurity is the leading cause for death in babies, March of Dimes has worked to discover the cause of birth defects, educate medical professionals and advocate the best practices for a healthy pregnancy to the public.

“I am a life-long resident of Brooklyn and have been involved in supporting the March of Dimes New York Chapter since my daughter was born premature, weighing just 4.2 pounds.” said Quaglione, who holds the foundation dear to his heart. “I consider myself one of the lucky ones with how well my daughter has grown, so I now want to do my part to help other babies from being born premature.”

Last year, Macy’s sold an extraordinary 1,870 coupons, collecting $9,350, to customers who exchanged just $5 for a great deal of savings. The saving pass grants 25 percent off all day and all weekend, on regular, sale and clearance items, and is even extended to brands usually excluded from promotions.  The Downtown Brooklyn location, stores throughout the Bronx and Queens and the Macy’s Flagship Store in Herald Square are also participating in the weekend of giving back.
