Society of Old Brooklynites swears in new board members

The Society of Old Brooklynites’ new board members were sworn in at a luncheon took place on Sunday, June 27, at the Bay Ridge Manor.

The organization, which dates back to the 1880s, commemorated its 136th luncheon with opera music provided by the Martha Cardona Opera Company and presentations by different members of the community.

“Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. It’s a great event to hold every year to discuss the history of Brooklyn,” said group Vice President Ted General.

Members of the board were sworn in by State Senator Marty Golden at the luncheon. They are: George Broadhead, president; Ellen Haywood, secretary; Sherman Silverman, treasurer; Ted General, first vice president and Mike Spinner, second vice president.

Haywood, the board’s new corresponding secretary, was honored to be a part of the ceremony and excited to begin her new role.

“It’s a fantastic honor. I love working with the community and the rest of Brooklyn,” said Haywood.

Haywood, who also works with various women’s groups such as the National Council of Negro Woman and Church Women United, has always worked to serve her community. She believes her new role as corresponding secretary is just another way of being closer to the community she loves.

“The society and the luncheon are a great representation of our community,” said Haywood. “I’m always meeting beautiful people.”
