Statue of Liberty to reopen on July 4

Lady Liberty will be taking visitors again come Independence Day, 2013.

Repairs to Ellis Island’s damaged energy infrastructure and destroyed docks are nearly completed, announced Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar in a statement today, so the National Parks Service will be ready to reopen the island on July 4, 2013 — just in time for the holiday celebrations.

The security screening operation in Battery Park should also be operable by that Thursday.

Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty has been closed since Hurricane Sandy swept in on October 28.

In 2011, 3.7 million visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island brought in $174 million, reported the National Park Service, and employs 2,218 people.
