Terriers retire the Bonnies for the season

It was the same tune but a different year as the third seeded Fontbonne Varsity Softball Team went down in defeat for the second year in a row to second seeded St. Francis Prep in the semi-final round of the Brooklyn-Queens playoffs. After trading wins in the last two games in the regular season, Fontbonne’s long-standing Queens rival sent the Bonnies packing for the season with a 2-0 hard fought loss in Fresh Meadows at Cunningham Park.

Looking back on the season Fontbonne Head Coach Frank Marinello said, “We worked hard this season and even had a five game winning streak beating some good teams. We just couldn’t bring that same type of play to the playoffs.”

St. Frances scored two runs early in the first inning after Bianca Marletta hit two Terriers, both of whom would eventually score on an outfield error and a subsequent RBI triple. After the first inning, Marletta settled down to give up just one more hit while striking out six Terriers over six innings.

Although Marletta held the Terriers scoreless after the first inning, the Bonnies just couldn’t get a hit when it counted leaving a total of 8 runners on base. The closest the Bonnies would come to making a comeback came in the third inning with one out and the bases loaded. Bearing down Terrier pitcher Katie Siano induced a ground ball from Arianna Dillon for an out and stuck out Natalie Lacognata to end the Fontbonne threat.

Looking ahead Coach Marinello stated that it’s always tough to lose five seniors from his softball program, but was also optimistic about next year’s team. “We’ve got some real good girls coming from our JV team to fill some spots for next year. In fact we look to be just as good and maybe even better than this year.”
