The Doo Wop Project comes to Brooklyn

Doo wop with a twist is coming to On Stage at Kingsborough.

The Doo Wop Project, a group featuring five gifted performers, Dominic Nolfi, Jevon McFerrin, Dominic Scaglione, Jr., Dwayne Cooper and Russell Fischer, who have starred in such Broadway hits as “Jersey Boys” and “Motown The Musical,” will thrill audiences at the southern Brooklyn venue on on Friday, April 15.

Together, they will sing famous doo wop hits along with some contemporary tunes.

“We met working on different Broadway shows together,” said band member Nolfi who played Tommy Devito in “Jersey Boys.” “We thought it would be a good idea to form a group to sing classic doo wop and take modern songs and re-imagine them as doo wop arrangements. Initially, there was a nucleus of us doing a show. We were doing ‘Jersey Boys,’ and we thought, let’s form a group and sing songs that preceded the Four Seasons. We thought it would be fun to explore the sound of that music.”

Members of the group, which formed four years ago, wanted to make sure that along with singing the hits, they delivered something unique to their performances. “The overall goal is to keep doo wop alive and breathe new life in contemporary music,” said fellow band mate Cooper from “Motown.” “It’s awesome and feels great. We don’t want to be stuck in demographics.”

According to the group, they also perform several new songs on their set list, by artists such as Bruno Mars and Alicia Keys. “We think about which songs are appropriate and have musical substance,” Cooper added.

Because of their wide range of songs, the Doo Wop Project has received not only a positive reception, but also a wide demographic.

“We’ve had shows where daughters, mothers and grandparents are enjoying the show. The one thing we are proud about is that it’s a show for everyone,” said Nolfi. “It’s part of Americana. Doo wop is American invention like jazz and musical theater. It’s our desire to pass this music along to younger generations and relive it with older generations that makes this special.”

“They love it. We’ve received wonderful reviews. The fans are jumping out of their seats and dancing during the show,” said Cooper. “It started out as an older crowd. Over time, you can see the older audience has invited the younger generations. They’re embracing us. It’s a melting pot of people. We’ve merged crowds together.”

Although Cooper and Nolfi lived the dream of performing in massive Broadway hits, they’re thrilled with the direction of the group.

“We are a democracy. We decide where we want to play and what to do,” said Nolfi. “On Broadway, it was a dream come true.” But there, he said, “You are not in charge. You show up and deliver.”

This won’t be the first time that The Doo Wop project will be performing at On Stage at Kingsborough. “They brought us back and it’s because of the response we get and that’s gratifying,” Nolfi said, adding that the last time they performed at the venue was shortly after Superstorm Sandy. “We were driving through some of the devastation. As soon as we got into theater, it was packed and there were lots of local people there, ready to have a good time.”

“Everyone was looking to have a good time during a difficult time,” added Cooper. “It’s a testament to why we’re coming back.”
