WATCH: Trailer drops for Netflix series starring New Utrecht grad, “Hamilton” star

From the stage to the screen.

Netlix, earlier this month, released its official trailer for its newest original series, “She’s Gotta Have It,” a contemporary, small-screen remake of Spike Lee’s 1985 debut film starring Bushwick native and New Utrecht High School graduate Anthony Ramos, who has already made a name for himself as the originator of both John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Grammy-Award winning musical “Hamilton.”

The show — in which the public school alum will play Mars Blackmon, a character originated by Lee in the now-30-year-old movie — centers on Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20s and her three lovers: Greer Childs, Jamie Overstreet and Blackmon.

Lee is the official director as well as an executive producer of the 10 half-hour episode-series, alongside his wife Tonya Lewis Lee.

To boot, the show was filmed in Ramos’ home borough of Brooklyn.

“I am beyond proud of Anthony’s accomplishments,” said Sara Steinweiss, a fellow New Utrecht alum and former head of the musical theater program at the school who Ramos considers a close friend and mentor. “More importantly I’m proud that he remains humble and kind and true to who he is.

“I cannot wait to watch his career soar,” she said.

In a 2016 interview with this paper, Ramos said that if not for Steinweiss, things might look a whole lot different for him today.

“I just want kids to know that, no matter what your circumstance is and no matter where you’re from, you can always make a way,” he said. “There’s always a way out of or a way in to do something – that thing that you want to do. I think that it’s important for parents to back their kids, to support them and to help them find some mentors – mentors like I had in Sara.”

The show’s other stars include DeWanda Wise as Darling, Cleo Anthony as Childs and Lyriq Bent as Overstreet.

“She’s Gotta Have It” will premiere Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23.
