Weekend kitchen fire near Shore and Marine leaves 66-year-old woman dead

A kitchen fire swept through a Bay Ridge apartment Saturday night, leaving the 66-year-old tenant who called it home dead.

According to officials, the blaze broke out inside of Edwina Faith Golas’ third floor apartment at 16 94th Street just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday, August 26. Firefighters responded to the call inside the six-story building to find Golas – who reports claim lived alone – unconscious and unresponsive.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Furthermore, officials said, a firefighter was transported to NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn with minor injuries.

Golas’ cat was rescued and revived at the scene. According to The Daily News, after firefighters resuscitated the feline, a neighbor rushed it to a local vet.

The cause of both the fire and Golas’ death are under investigation. According to reports, officials are looking into whether the blaze is what killed the Ridgeite or if she was already dead when it broke out.

The New York City fire marshal will determine the cause of the fire and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The fire – which was contained to just Golas’ dwelling – was under control as of 12:05 a.m.
