TGIF and happy weekend! With great weather comes a long list of things you can do. Each Friday, we’ll give you a quick rundown of some great events taking place over the weekend – which are also available in our Events Calendar. If we missed something, feel free to post your own event here.
Friday July 27
- “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” -Gore Vidal. Join Adam Suerte – Brooklyn Spectator Magazine’s inaugural cover artist – at his Urban Folk Art Studio for the Brooklyn Yes Indeed art show, showcasing the artwork of a clutch of Brooklyn artists from the their DIY roots as it evolved over time. Located at 99 – 101 Smith Street, from 7 to 10 p.m.
- Come taste these rare beers in Culturefix, a beautiful three-story art gallery/performance space/bar at 9 Clinton Street in Manhattan. You’ll try some unconventionally processed beers and other rare craft beers that you won’t typically come across. $40, the event takes place from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Click here for more information.
- Whitehall Bar + Kitchen is kicking off the Olympics with an opening ceremony cocktail event. The opening ceremony will be shown a big screen TV and specialty Pimm and Greenall cocktails will be served along with some hors d’oeuvres. If you have a London passport, you get a cocktail on the house. The event takes place Friday July 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. and is located on 19 Greenwich Avenue New York, NY.
Saturday July 28
- Check out the inaugural Catalpa NYC Music Festival at Randall’s Island that will feature over 40 performers including Snoop Dogg, The Black Keys and Girl Talk. While you’re there, be sure to check out the lengthy list of dream team food vendors such as Momofuku, Baohaus, Luke’s Lobster, Crif Dogs and a couple more of our very favorite restaurants. Come for the music, stay for the food. Or the other way around. A day pass is $99.99, a VIP day pass is $169.99. Saturday and Sunday, July 28th-29th 1 to 11 p.m. on both days.
- Join the Street Tree Stewardship Clean & Green this Saturday, July 28 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the The Salt Lot
(2nd Ave. and 5th St.). Volunteers will maintain street trees and green streets surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Work will include, pruning, weeding, installing new plant materials and generally helping our public green spaces thrive. Please wear closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water, and wear sunscreen! - Green-Wood Cemetery will unveil a 6’6″ bronze sculpture called “The Greeter” from American sculptor John Coleman in honor of famous 19th century painter George Catlin. Catlin is known for painting Native American Indians. The sculpture is based on Catlin’s depiction of Black Moccasin, the Chief of the Hidatsa Indians who welcomed Lewis and Clark in 1804 as they explored the upper Missouri River. The monument will be unveiled at 1 p.m. near the gravesite of Catlin and his wife. The ceremony coincides with the anniversary of Catlin’s 216th birthday. - Join the New York Historical Society while they host a beer tasting with Itaca Beer Company, in conjunction with the New Exhibition Beer Here: Brewing New York’s History. These half-hour tastings are designed to give guests an opportunity to learn about the brewing process directly from local brewers. The tastings celebrate the Historical Society’s summer exhibition, Beer Here. Tickets are $20-35 online Saturday July 28th, 2 pm and/or 4 pm. The New York Historical Society is located on 170 Central Park West New York, NY.
- Five chefs from cooperative MealKu will be cooking dishes and sampling them to the public. The public attendees will then pick a winner. This event is free and will feature sushi-grade seafood from Karen Ann Charters, who distributes to Le Bernardin and Esca. This is sure to be a delicious evening. The Cook-Off at Gourmet Guild in Williamsburg is located on 110 Broadway and be from 6:30 – 9 p.m. For more information visit their Facebook page.
