Barclays Center and GrowNYC have joined forces to welcome a weekly Greenmarket on the Flatbush Avenue side of the venue, just feet away from where the first Brooklyn Greenmarket premiered over 30 years ago.
The new Greenmarket, located in front of Barclays between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, will be held every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. now through Nov. 27.
“We are thrilled to return to the original site of the first Greenmarket in Brooklyn, right here at Flatbush and Atlantic,” said Michael Hurwitz, director of Greenmarket, a program of GrowNYC. “Since that market’s opening in 1977, our organization has evolved and grown enormously, just as Downtown Brooklyn has.”
Market-goers can expect plenty of perks – from the Greenmarket’s nine local vendors to cooking demonstrations, free recipes, family-friendly fun and more.
“I am excited to welcome GrowNYC’s Greenmarket Farmers Market to what has become the most exciting area in all of New York City,” said Regina Cahill, president of the North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District.
The market’s vendors share Cahill’s excitement.
“Barclays Center and Greenmarket are a natural partnership,” said Rick Field of Rick’s Picks. “Barclays Center has had the freshest entertainment from day one, and Greenmarket has had the freshest produce and added value products for over 35 years.”
Field called in an “honor” to be able to sell at a Greenmarket less than half a mile away from where his recipes were developed – behind the doors of a one-bedroom Prospect Heights apartment.
Rick’s Picks will be joined by American Seafood, Apple State Hilltop Family Farm, Artisan Oven, Body and Soul Bakery, Goodale Farm, Jersey Farm Produce, John D Madura Farm and Terhune Orchard to bring Brooklyn the best of the best in fresh produce.
Barclays Center is happy to be broadening their horizons.
“We remain committed to offering more than sports and entertainment and we are proud to be a place for people of all interests,” said Bruce Ratner, Executive Chairman of Forest City Ratner Companies, the developer and majority owner of Barclays Center.
In addition, the venue and their developer, Forest City Ratner Companies, have partnered with the New York City Food Truck Association to bring food trucks to the venue three times over the course of the summer. The next food truck event will be held on Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Organizers agree the Greenmarket’s location will play a vital role in its potential success.
“Barclays Center is an ideal location because of the number of bus and subway routes available for patrons,” said Cahill. “This new market will be a great asset to our community.”
