SUMMARY:Gregg Kallor | Sketches from Frankenstein (World Premiere)
DESCRIPTION:Unison Media and The Green-Wood Historic Fund are presenting an all-new series of classical music concerts titled The Angel’s Share\, to be performed in Green-Wood’s Catacombs. \nMary Shelley’s groundbreaking novel Frankenstein was published 200 years ago. But far from the grunting Hollywood brutishness of Boris Karloff\, the original told the heartbreaking story of a living\, feeling creature\, brought into the world only to be forsaken by his creator and left to fend for himself in a hostile world. Drawing the parallels to modern society\, pianist/composer Gregg Kallor will offer the World Premiere of a new suite of operatic sketches based on the monster’s harrowing tale\, in a partnership with On Site Opera. The program will also feature his other acclaimed vocal works\, and the premiere of a solo piano piece in tribute to Leonard Bernstein\, who is interred at Green-Wood. \nThe Program: Kallor: Sketches from Frankenstein (World Premiere)\, and other works \nThe Performers: Gregg Kallor\, piano; Joshua Roman\, cello; Jennifer Johnson Cano\, mezzo soprano \n\n\n\n\nTicketholders must be 21 years or older. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.

SUMMARY:CANDID CONVERSATIONS ABOUT DEATH
DESCRIPTION:Green-Wood’s Death Café continues throughout the fall. In small groups\, participants share their thoughts on death and dying in a supportive environment where they can feel comfortable talking about these universal\, but rarely discussed\, topics. \nThe Death Café is inspired by centuries-old European salons where people gathered informally to discuss philosophical\, political\, or scientific ideas. The first Death Café was started by British entrepreneur Jon Underwood in 2010 as a way to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives.” To date\, over 5\,000 of these meetings have taken place in countries around the world. \nGreen-Wood’s death educator Amy Cunningham\, an independent funeral director\, leads the Death Café. Light refreshments are served. \nWHEN:  Tuesdays: \n\n\n\n\n\nOctober 9\, 2018\nNovember 13\, 2018\n\nReservations are recommended.

SUMMARY:“Birding in Peace” at Green-Wood
DESCRIPTION:The Green-Wood Cemetery continues its popular “Birding in Peace” walking tours on Sunday mornings this fall (see dates below).  Before the gates open to the public\, both novice and expert bird watchers have a rare opportunity to discover and observe birds of all species in the peace and quiet of Green-Wood. SUMMARY:Black in Nineteenth-Century Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Trolley Tour Examines African American History at Both The Green-Wood Cemetery and Weeksville Heritage Center \nIn 1838\, just eleven years after New York State abolished slavery\, a free Black man named James Weeks made his first purchase of land in Brooklyn\, now the Weeksville Heritage Center. In the same year\, The Green-Wood Cemetery was established as one of the first rural cemeteries in the United States. \nBeginning at Green-Wood\, this trolley tour explores the history of the African American experience in the nineteenth-century\, including the stories of Margaret Pine (1778–1857)\, the last woman to have lived as a slave in New York and Susan Smith McKinney Steward (1847–1918)\, whose family owned land in Weeksville and became the first black female doctor in the state\, among others.  Afterward\, the trolley heads to Weeksville in Crown Heights to discover its history as one of America’s largest free black communities prior to the Civil War. \nThis trolley tour begins and ends at Green-Wood. A box lunch will be provided. Please email events@green-wood.com with any food allergies.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn and the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, Brooklyn was the third largest city in the Union\, and more than 30\,000 of its residents enlisted as soldiers and sailors. Join Green-Wood Historian Jeff Richman and writer Matthew Dellinger as they share the stories of Brooklynites who took up arms: Clarence D. MacKenzie\, the 12 year-old drummer boy who became the first casualty of the Civil War from Kings County; Colonel Edward Fowler who led the 14th Brooklyn Infantry at Gettysburg; Brooklyn native “The Gallant Samuel Sims\,” who died at the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg\, Virginia; and many others. \nThe trolley tour will also explore the crucial role of women on the home front\, namely those who organized The Brooklyn Sanitary Fair of 1864\, which raised funds for clothing and medical supplies for the troops. Reservations are recommended.
