Bay Ridge hero to receive U.S. Army Medal of Heroism for acting during London terror attack

A Bay Ridge hero will receive his due.

After a letter was penned by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and Congressmember Dan Donovan, Bay Ridge native and ROTC cadet Mark Kindschuh will be receiving the U.S. Army Medal of Heroism.

The 19-year-old Boston College student was was in a London bar with friends on June 3 during terror attacks and tended to a victim bleeding after a stab.

Kindschuh ran outside the pub in search of more medical help at the very same time that the police were shooting the attackers.

The announcement that Kindschuh would be receiving the Army’s highest ROTC Medal was made on Wednesday, August 30.

“Cadet Kindschuh’s heroic actions on that day represent the best of what the Army looks for in the men and women who volunteer to become part of the Army ROTC,” Major General Christopher P. Hughes of the U.S. Army said in a letter.

The Bay Ridge hero was thrilled when he was told about the award.

“I am beyond honored and humbled to receive this award, and glad that I was able to represent the Army in a positive way,” Kindschuh told this paper. “I want to reiterate that the law enforcement and medical personnel who responded to the situation are worthy of far more praise than I am. I am alive today due to the efforts of the brave police officers and for that I am forever grateful.”

The U.S. Army Medal of Heroism is awarded by the Department of the Army to an ROTC cadet who performs an act of heroism. The achievement must be an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding that it sets the individual apart from fellow students. It must also have involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage.

Schumer and Donovan also shared their excitement.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to congratulate ROTC Cadet Mark Kindschuh for being awarded the ROTC Medal of Heroism,” said Schumer. “During the tragic London attack, ROTC Cadet Mark Kindschuh showcased immense heroism by running towards the danger, not away from it, to save the life of a complete stranger and because his actions, that man is alive today. I am proud to have recommended ROTC Cadet Mark Kindschuh for this award and look forward to his future successes in the military.”

“I’m so proud to represent this young man in Congress,” added Donovan. “His bravery and selflessness serve an example to us all. I’m sure the ROTC Medal of Heroism he courageously earned is just the beginning of a bright and impactful career of service to our country. Thank you, Mark.”
