Local Bay Ridge residents braved the rain for the third year in a row to watch a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Owl’s Head Park on Tuesday, December 6.
The Owl’s Head Park Horticulture Group, which is part of the Shore Road Parks Conservancy, hosted its Fifth Annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. About 200 people attended the event, located on 68th Street across from Bliss Terrace.
“It went really well even though it was pouring rain,” said Susan Frances, community coordinator for the park’s Horticulture Group. “It was still a good turnout.”
In addition, Santa Claus arrived in a BRAVO ambulance instead of the usual police car or firetruck.
“BRAVO was brave enough to come in the rain,” Frances said.
State Senator Marty Golden and City Councilmember Vincent Gentile also made an appearance.
The night’s festivities continued with Christmas music performed by the Guild for Exceptional Children Chorus. Moreover, attendees were able to listen to music from DJ David Matthews, co-founder of the Horticulture Group, while enjoying the hot cocoa provided by the Bay Ridge Manor, for the fifth year in a row.
Horticulture Group’s next event, MulchFest, during which people turn their old Christmas trees into mulch, will occur at Owl’s Head Park on January 7 and 8.
