Beating Cancer in Heels: To tell or not to tell

Hola, Coachee,

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I thought I was going to go through the whole process without telling anyone outside of my immediate circle. I didn’t want to talk about it more than I had to or deal with everyone’s reaction to me as someone with cancer. I wanted to be the same but I wasn’t, well at least not in my old world.

Feeling alone as a young cancer patient, I reached out for support. All I wanted was someone to give me tips on how to deal with this all in a way that I could relate to. I didn’t want someone to make me feel guilty for stressing over things other than my cancer, but most importantly I wanted to be inspired. Not finding the support I needed, I soon realized that others must feel as alone as I did.

Now, it wasn’t about me. It was about many others suffering at this very moment. That is when I decided to TELL and I never looked back. I took charge of the emotions that were trying to defeat me and so can you.

It might be difficult to tell others about your illness at first. However, in time, you will find that the more you open up are about what is happening in your life, the quicker you will find out who you want around you.

Sometimes, others’ reactions will be good and other times not so good, but at the end of the day, you will see the true colors shining through and that’s why they will love you! So don’t be afraid to let go!

Now, Coachee, let’s get you talking.

How do you know if you want to tell your inner circle?

Ask yourself…

Do you want them to know what you are going through?

Do you want them to be a support system to you?

Will telling them make you feel better?

How will this help you in this area of your life?

Empowerment tip: This moment in time is about you and your survival. As you continue to be honest with yourself about what you need, you will be amazed of all the good that comes out of it!

Tips on how to deal with the way your inner circle deals with to your diagnosis

Remind yourself that you cannot control other people’s emotions.

Remember that some people are not as strong as others. If their actions are not to your liking, it most likely has something they are dealing with, not you.

If you need to, express to them how you feel about their actions or lack of during this time of your life.

Reach out for professional support.

Remember not everyone knows the right thing to say.

Perks of telling your story

You never know who is could help.

You never know where it can take you.

You leave more of an imprint on the world.

You realize who is real in this world by how others respond.

You learn to accept what you are going through.

Empowerment tip: You are amazing so continue to BE IT!
