Brooklyn Education: Back to school at Adelphi Academy

Students in all grade levels gathered in the John Lockwood Auditorium Theatre on September 10 to kick off Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s historic 153rd Academic Year, which also marks the Academy’s 50th year as a member of the Bay Ridge community.  Excited students and teachers spent the day engaging in various icebreakers and team-building exercises. The following day, students were treated to a pizza party in The Panther Café, the school’s dining area.

With many new programs available for 2015-2016 – including Adelphi’s Theater Arts Program, a new Middle School Robotics Program and an expansion of the Lower School’s Early Childhood Development Program – members of the administration and staff could not wait to begin the academic year!

New and ongoing after-school athletics and extra-curricular activities available for the fall include fitness, soccer, theater, creative crafting and art studio. New classes include Public Speaking, expanded SAT Prep and Astronomy. In addition, students will participate in etiquette classes as well as career guidance, mentoring and leadership throughout the year.

Several renovations have already taken place on the campus and more are underway, from new paint in the hallways and classrooms to the revitalization of the Academy’s Art Studio, Music Tower, Recording Studio and Computer and Science Laboratories into state-of-the-art educational centers.

P.S. 160 starts each day in a musical way! First there was “Swinging to the Sounds of September,” and then there was “Rocking to the Tunes of June.” Now music is a daily morning motivator at P.S. 160.  Each day, students and staff members gather on a positive note while listening to mood-boosting music that increases their energy levels.  From jazz to pop to hip-hop and rock, students are smiling from ear to ear, bopping to sounds that soothe their souls.  Teachers move and groove as they walk their students out of the gymnasium and up the steps to their classrooms.  The children are engaged and ready to learn as the lively music sets the tone for the day.

Bishop Kearney High School hosted an event at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club for prospective students from the Rockaway area. More than 30 junior high school girls and their families enjoyed an evening of easy conversation, light refreshments, and the opportunity to learn more about all that Bishop Kearney has to offer.

Bishop Kearney’s President, Dr. Margaret Minson, welcomed the students and spoke about several new and exciting programs at the school, including internships in the education field as well as free SAT Prep and college mentoring through CollegeSpring. Prospective students and their families were greeted by current Kearney students, parents, alumnae, and track and basketball coaches. A consistent theme throughout the evening was that Bishop Kearney helps girls mature into “women of faith and confidence.” Several alumnae expressed their hopes of passing along the Kearney legacy to their daughters.
