Brooklyn welcomes first babies of 2017

Congratulations are in order for Brooklyn’s smallest New Year’s revelers as the borough welcomed its first babies of 2017 on Sunday, January 1.

First time parents Diana Espinosa and Phillip Colmar welcomed NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital’s first baby of 2017, Jacob Colmar-Espinosa, at exactly 2:51 a.m.

“We are so thrilled to welcome Jacob into the world,” said Espinosa of her newborn son who weighed in at five pounds, seven and a half ounces and measured 18.5 inches in length. “There really is no better way to kick off the New Year!”

“He’ll have an amazing party every year,” Colmar added.

NYU Lutheran Medical Center’s first baby of 2017, Helen Zhu, arrived at 4:10 a.m. and weighed in at seven pounds, 13 ounces and was 22 inches in length, according to NYU Lutheran. Baby Helen is the fourth child for Sunset Park residents Bin Xing Wang and Daci Zhu.

The first baby born at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island on New Year ’s Day was baby girl Alayna Baloch, born to Nasma Baloch at 1:38 a.m., weighing seven pounds and four ounces.
