Cops investigate alleged hate crime outside of Bay Ridge mosque

Police are investigating a possible hate crime that took place outside of a Bay Ridge mosque on Wednesday, July 13, when two men shouted anti-Arab slurs and menaced a man for leaning on one of their cars.

The incident occurred near the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge on Fifth Avenue near 68th Street about 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13 after the 23-year-old victim leaned on one of the men’s Mercedes. The men approached him and began cursing at him, making racial slurs and asking him what he was doing on the car, police sources say.

When the victim apologized, one of the men replied with “There is no sorry,” according to the NYPD, and grabbed him by the shirt. One of the men flashed a knife at the victim, who tried to run across the street as the other man proceeded to grab a baton from the car, according to a police source.

A witness intervened, and the two men fled. The victim then called 911.

The police source said the investigation of the incident is ongoing, and added that it is “likely” than an arrest will be made “pretty quickly.”
